ZIPP calls this the “fastest aluminum wheelset out there” – and with a reputation as the fastest wheels around and technology honed in years of wind tunnel tests – you can bet these wheels are fast. A set of the new ZIPP 101 Aluminum Wheels could be yours: • ENTER TO WIN HERE •

Featuring the first fully toroidal aluminum rim, the 101 is the most affordable way for cyclists and triathletes to take advantage of Zipp’s aerodynamic technologies developed during two decades of research and results with carbon fiber wheels. According to Zipp, all of their data over the years tells them that aero wheels are faster for every rider. The 101 takes what they’ve learned about rim shape and aero design from working with carbon and applies it to aluminum. Their testing shows that the 101 is the fastest aluminum wheel out there for training and racing.

Zipp developed the 101’s 30mm-deep rim in the wind tunnel with a proprietary profile curve extending across the braking surfaces. This fully toroidal design creates less drag than either a standard V-shape or a hybrid-toroidal profile with flat, parallel braking surfaces.

Compared to the industry’s benchmark shallow-profile race wheel, the 101’s aero performance is even more impressive, with savings of up to 42 seconds over 40km. With a maximum width of 24.5mm to complement most common tire sizes, the bulged profile of the 101 smoothes airflow around the wheel more effectively than typical, narrow rim designs.

The 101’s wide platform also resists pinch flatting, improves lateral stiffness, and provides stable handling on rough surfaces. Because the rim is narrower at the hook bead than in the middle, the 101 can be used safely with tires as narrow as 21mm, unlike other wide-profile clincher rims. The maximum recommended tire width for the 101 is 35mm.

Like every Zipp wheelset, the 101 is built by hand in Speedway, Indiana, using premium Sapim CX-Ray spokes and Zipp’s 88 and 188 hubs with Swiss steel bearings. The hubs are manufactured in Indiana using the proprietary Z310.9 alloy, and feature oversize 17mm axles and adjustable bearing preload.

The 101 wheelset weighs 1,523 grams and has a suggested retail price of $1,300. It is available in 700c clincher only. Zipp 101s are currently available at your local bicycles shop.

About Zipp Speed Weaponry
Zipp Speed Weaponry was founded in 1988 with the sole mission of making athletes faster on their bikes. Over the course of the last twenty years, Zipp has done exactly that, by drawing on its core competencies of design engineering, composites knowledge, and wind tunnel development. It is these competencies that have allowed Zipp to deliver a series of firsts in the cycling industry. From the first carbon disc wheel to the first carbon crank to the first wheel to achieve negative drag in the wind tunnel. These firsts have helped Zipp athletes to become champions in the toughest races in the world, on the fiercest roads in the world, from the cobbled roads of Belgium to the Queen K in Kona. Zipp Wheels are handmade in Speedway, IN USA.

HTC-Columbia’s number one leadout man, Mark Renshaw, has signed on with the team for two more seasons. The Australian has been a key factor in many of sprinter Mark Cavendish’s biggest wins, although this year his efforts in the Tour de France were cut short when he was disqualified for headbutting Julian Dean in the closing kilometers of stage 11. He found success most recently with a stage win of his own at the Tour of Denmark.

“I’m happy to extend with the team,” said Renshaw. “I know my role and I’m happy to commit to that and be part of a successful team. I’m for sure looking forward to more sprints with Cav and hopefully next year I’ll also get more chances to prove myself as one of Australia’s top sprinters ready for the Copenhagen World Championships.”Team manager Rolf Aldag was equally enthusiastic about the contract extension.”Mark is a key rider in our sprint execution and was critical to our sprint success in the Tour de France this year and last,” Aldag commented. “He also has a lot of potential as a top sprinter himself which he proved on Saturday when he won a stage in Denmark.”"We trust in his talent and we’re happy to have him as part of the solid foundation for our team,” Aldag added.

Löfkvist and Gerrans to Lead Sky at Vuelta

Team Sky has announced it nine-man squad for the Vuelta a España, the third and final grand tour of the season. The team will be headed by Swede Thomas Löfkvist who was Team Sky’s highest-placed rider on the general classification at the Tour de France. He’ll be joined by two other men who took part in Tour, Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha and Australia’s Simon Gerrans, the latter having made a full recovery after breaking his arm on the eighth stage. South African John-Lee Augustyn, Finland’s Kjell Carlström, Norway’s Lars-Petter Nordhaug and British trio Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard and Ben Swift complete the line-up.

“Following Thomas Löfkvist’s performance at the Tour de France he’ll go in as our GC rider but we’ll also be heading to the Vuelta with a stage-win mentality,” said team manger Dave Brailsford.

“Simon Gerrans is a key stage winner – that’s his forte and how he made his name,” Brailsford added. “Unfortunately he had to drop out of the Tour because of injury so he wants to get out there in Spain and try and search out some stage wins.”

Gerrans, the first Australian to win stages at all three Grand Tours, admits the lure of the Vuelta gave him added impetus in his recovery from his Tour de France injuries. He returns to action at the Tour du Limousin next week.

“It’s a big, big race and it’s given me a real focus for the last part of the year,” Gerrans said of the Vuelta. “We’ve got a strong team to go for stage wins and get in the crucial breaks. Pretty much everyone on the team is capable of doing that if and when the opportunity arises.

New Parcours for Univest Grand Prix

The Univest Grand Prix returns to Souderton and Doylestown on September 11-12 with a new race course for Saturday’s UCI 1.2 road race and what promises to be the strongest field in the history of the 13-year-old North American classic. The 83-mile race will now consist of 11 laps of a 5.8-mile, figure eight course through the roller-coaster roads of Souderton, Telford and Franconia before tightening into five finishing laps on a 3.8-mile circuit in Souderton and Telford. The racers will face the challenging Wile Avenue hill in Souderton 16 times.

“This exciting and dynamic new race course will offer superb spectator views of a UCI road race and represents our vision of the future North American road racing format,” said race organizer John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling. “It’s a modern take on the classic road race with much more excitement for the fans who will see the field twice on each lap in a shorter but more intense circuit.”

The strongest field in the event history is expected as many of the United States top professionals use the weekend as a final test before the USA Cycling National Professional Road Race and Time Trial Championships a week later in Greenville, South Carolina.

The popular Cyclosportif has been reformatted for 2010 as well. The ride will now be held entirely on the 3.8-mile finishing circuit of the Univest Grand Prix. Families, new riders and dedicated cyclists alike will have a two-hour window to see how many laps they can accomplish on a professional race course.

Racing continues on Sunday, Sept. 12 with the thrilling Univest Criterium of Doylestown. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the popular event, which provides a second day of fast-paced, circuit-style racing on a 1.4-mile course. In addition to the professional race, the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance will once again hold the Doylestown Arts Festival

Bellis Ready to Race

Jonathan Bellis will continue his comeback to the professional peloton with a participation in the upcoming Tour of Britain. Bellis, who sustained severe injuries in a motor scooter crash in Italy last year, returned to racing at the British national championships in June. He will take his place in the Saxo Bank team’s lineup for the Tour of Britain alongside Jaroslav Marycz, Jonas Aaen Jorgensen, Lucas Sebastien Haedo, Alex Rasmussen, and Frank Høj.

“I’m delighted to welcome Team Saxo Bank back to The Tour, as they have been one of our staunchest supporters, and have enjoyed great success in the event,” said Tour of Britain race director Mick Bennett.

“I am also pleased to see Jonathan returning to The Tour this year, and I, and all of the organising team, wish him all the best for the race,” Bennett added. “I’m sure he will see a lot of support from the British public during The Tour.”

Czech Republic Loses Former Champion

Former Czech cyclo-cross world champion Radomir Simunek died Tuesday after a long illness at the age of 48, the CTK news agency said, quoting his wife. Simunek became the junior world champion in 1980 and amateur world champion in 1983 and 1984, before winning the professional title in 1991. He was the only cyclist ever to win titles in all three categories.

In 1992, he caused a car accident in which three people were killed, and served four months in prison before being released on a presidential pardon. After ending his career aged 40, Simunek coached his son Radomir jr., now racing for Belgium’s BKCP-Powerplus team, who finished eighth at this year’s world championships.

Cruise Park City with Bob Roll and Eric Heiden
Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah sponsor OC Tanner is offering cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to win a 90-minute bicycle ride in and around majestic Park City with legendary cyclists Bob Roll and Eric Heiden on Saturday, August 21, 2010. The ride is the same day as stage four of the Tour, the Heiden Davidson Orthopedics criterium in downtown Park City. The ride will begin at 8 a.m.

“OC Tanner is a great supporter of the Tour of Utah and we appreciate the fact that they are not only offering this exciting bike ride, but also the opportunity for Bob Roll and Eric Heiden fans to meet and ride with them in Park City,” said Tour of Utah President, Steve Miller.

Those interested in the bike ride can enter at either OC Tanner’s Salt Lake City and Park City retail locations (Salt Lake City: 15 South State Street or Park City: 416 Main Street), or by filling out the entry form on the sponsorship page at www.tourofutah.com between now and August 20 at 3 p.m. Twenty winners will be selected at random from the entries and will be contacted no later than 5 p.m., Friday, August 20.

In addition, OC Tanner is holding an in-store autograph session with Bob Roll on Saturday, August 21 from 2-3 p.m. at their Park City retail showroom located at 416 Main Street. This event is free and open to the public. No advance registration is necessary.

Bob Roll is a legendary American professional cyclist, author and television sports commentator. He was a member of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team until 1990 and competed for the Motorola Cycling Team in 1991. In 1992, Roll moved to Greg LeMond’s Z Team and added mountain biking to his racing accomplishments. Roll is currently a cycling commentator for the Versus cable network’s coverage of the Tour de France.

Eric Heiden is the five-time Gold Medalist from the 1980 Winter Olympics and is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. After retiring from Speed Skating, Heiden transitioned his athletic abilities to cycling as a founding member of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team and became the 1st US United States National Bicycling Champion and participated in the Tour de France. After retiring from professional cycling, Heiden attended medical school and became an Orthopedic Surgeon. In July 2006, Heiden left UC Davis and relocated to Park City, Utah and now directs the Sports Medicine department at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) in Salt Lake City, UT.

Ina-Yoko Teutenberg Claims 21st Victory
HTC-Columbia’s Ina-Yoko Teutenberg claimed her twenty-first victory of the season on Monday when she crossed the line ahead of the field to win stage one of the Route de France. Teutenberg was the fastest on the 116.4-kilometre stage from Guingamp to Locmine which saw lots of different attacks before the race finally came together.

“It was a very fast-moving stage and it wasn’t ever certain it was going to be a bunch sprint,” said HTC-Columbia sports director Ronny Lauke. “Judith [Arndt, HTC-Columbia] brought back one dangerous move on a last climb, and after that Ina could go for it in the sprint.”

“I wanted to lead out Adrie [Visser, HTC-Columbia] for the sprint but I actually went too hard with 300 metres go and we lost contact,” Teutenberg said later. “I ended up closing a gap on some other riders, and then could hold off [Giorgia] Bronzini [of Italy] to get the win. It was a pretty flat finish, fairly straightforward, but I didn’t feel too great doing the sprint. The sprint hurt a lot more than it usually does. I haven’t raced since the Giro and I was suffering a lot on that last hill. I was about to get dropped.”

A winner of two stages last year in the Route de France, Teutenberg says there are at least two more stages that could end in bunch sprints. “We want to go for GC here, and there’s a time trial on Thursday, where [HTC-Columbia rider] Judith [Arndt] could be going for yellow. So we’ll take it day by day and see how it goes.”

UCI Rankings: Martin Jumps in at 36th
Following his win in the Tour of Poland, Garmin-Transitions rider Daniel Martin has jumped from unranked to 36th among the world’s top pros. Within the top 20, the riders’ rankings remain unchanged. Alberto Contador is still the world’s number one rider, with Joaquin Rodriguez and Cadel Evans rounding out the top three.

National and team rankings remain unchanged as well. Spain leads Italy and Belgium, while Astana retains its edge ahead of Saxo Bank and Katusha.

Sanchez Wins Tour of Burgos
Euskaltel-Euskadi’s Samuel Sanchez won the Tour of Burgos in northern Spain on Sunday after sprinting to victory in the fifth and final stage.

The Olympic road race champion, who finished fourth in the Tour de France, beat compatriot Ezequiel Mosquera by one second after the 155km ride from Areniscas de los Pinares to Lagunas de Neila.

Stage:
1. Samuel Sanchez (ESP, Euskaltel-Euskadi) 3hr 59min 39sec 2. Ezequiel Mosquera (ESP, Xacobeo-Galicia) at 1sec 3. Vincenzo Nibali (ITA, Liquigas-Doimo) at 16sec

Overall:
1. Sanchez 16hr 15min 38sec
2. Mosquera at 1sec
3. Nibali at 21sec

Martin Wins Tour of Poland
Irish rider Daniel Martin won the Tour of Poland on Saturday. The 23-year-old rider from Garmin-Transitions took the race lead after the first mountain stage at Ustron on Thursday. He finished eight seconds ahead of Slovenia’s Grega Bole in the overall standings.

German sprinter Andre Greipel won the seventh and final stage, a 163.9 kilometers ride from Nowy Targ to Krakow.

“During the last three days I didn’t even dare think I could win,”
said Martin after achieving his first ProTour victory. “But it’s a dream which has come true and I’m very, very happy.”

Hoy Unhurt After Car Crash
Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy emerged unscathed after an accident in his 80,000 pounds Jaguar.

Hoy’s new XKR sports car was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Vectra as he was about to turn onto a main road on Thursday evening near the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

A spokeswoman for Hoy said the cycling star was not hurt in the accident and is continuing with his training in preparation for the start of the season.

“Chris was slowly edging forwards to turn right into a main road when the front of his car was hit from the right by a car that had overtaken the queue of stationary traffic by driving on the chevron area. The driver of the other car apologised to Chris and admitted it was his fault,” she said.

Hoy won three Olympic titles in Beijing two years ago, making him the most successful male Olympic cyclist of all time.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At 5.51pm on Thursday August 5 2010, police were called to Ashton New Road near to the City of Manchester stadium to reports of a two vehicle collision involving a Jaguar and a Vauxhall Vectra.”

Rasmussen was kicked off the 2007 Tour de France while wearing the polka dot jersey, and was subsequently fired by Rabobank, after inconsistencies in his training records came to light. Former pro Davide Cassani spotted the big Dane training in the Dolomites when his diary said he was in Mexico, and Rasmussen was handed a ban for the deception.

The suspension was never popular in Denmark with many commentators feeling that Rasmussen was treated unfairly, so it’s not a huge surprise to find that fellow countryman Riis, who admitted in 2007 that he had doped in the past, is considering offering ‘the chicken’ a return to the big time. Riis is quoted in The Copenhagen Post as saying he would ‘leave the door open’ for Rasmussen.

‘Naturally I’m interested,’ said Riis. ‘Michael deserves the chance to make a comeback. Whether it’s with me or someone else I don’t know, but I’m certainly going to consider him.’

Rasmussen for his part is naturally optimistic about the possible hook-up ‘For me it would be a perfect scenario to ride for Riis with Alberto Contador,’ he said. ‘I don’t think it’s an unrealistic hope but obviously it’s Bjarne’s decision in the end.’

Federal investigators looking into allegations of drug-taking by Lance Armstrong and other members of the former US Postal Service team have stepped up their enquiries following the end of the Tour de France last month, and have secured statements from several former team mates of the Texan cyclists claiming that he did take performance enhancing substances, according to a report in The New York Times.

The enquiry stems from accusations first made against the seven-times Tour de France winner and other members of the US Postal Service team in May this year by Floyd Landis, who rode for the team between 2002 and 2004. Armstrong has consistently denied Landis’s claims, pointing the cyclist’s vehement denial and subsequent admission of his own drug use as evidence of his unreliability.

One of Landis’s accusations is that the team sold bicycles supplied by Trek to finance its performance enhancing drugs programme, meaning that the enquiry concerns not just the use of drugs itself, but also whether sponsors such as US Postal Services were defrauded.

However, The New York Times says that other cyclists who have been interviewed by investigators, headed by Jeff Novitzky, who also led the investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative that revealed drug use by athletes such as Marion Jones and Dwain Chambers and baseball star Barry Bonds, among others, have provided detailed statements supporting Landis’s accusations, according to one of the cyclists concerned and two other people close to the enquiry.

Yesterday, the cyclist concerned, who requested anonymity and has never tested positive for performance enhancing substances, told the newspaper that he had outlined his own drug use to investigators, and had also given details of doping practices within the US Postal Service Team, adding that Armstrong had been aware of and encouraged them.

Besides the use of drugs itself, one strand of the investigation concerns Landis’s accusation that the team sold bicycles supplied by Trek to finance its performance enhancing drugs programme, meaning that the enquiry concerns not just the use of drugs itself, but also whether sponsors such as US Postal Services were defrauded.

One former rider who is believed to have met with the grand jury investigating the allegations is Tyler Hamilton, currently serving an eight-year ban for doping, who received a subpoena to appear before it last month.

Defence attorney Bryan D. Daly, who is acting for Armstrong, claimed that those cyclists accusing Armstrong of using drugs were lying. “They [the prosecutors] just want them to incriminate Lance Armstrong and that’s my concern,” he explained, going on to say that prosecutors were working with the United States Anti-Doping Agency to put pressure on former team mates of Armstrong to testify.

“To the extent that there’s anyone besides Floyd Landis saying things, the bottom line is, if you take away the soap opera and look at the scientific evidence, there is nothing,” continued Daly, who added that the reasons for the enquiry remained “very murky for us.”

The lawyer concluded: “If Lance Armstrong came in second in those Tour de France races, there’s no way that Lance Armstrong would be involved in these cases. I think that the concern is that they are caught up in the pursuit of a celebrity to catch him in a lie.”

According to the New York Times, the federal prosecution team, including Doug Miller who, like Novitzky, was involved in the BALCO investigation, wants to push the case along because some of the allegations that they are investigating date back nearly ten years and will therefore become statute barred early next year.

The newspaper added that Novitzky had contacted a number of former team mates of Armstrong before the Tour de France began last month, including George Hincapie, now with BMC Racing, whose lawyer said at the time that his client would speak to investigators once the tour was over. It is not known whether that has happened yet.

As The New York Times points out, there is a strong incentive for cyclists who receive an interview request from Novitzky or are subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury to co-operate. In the BALCO case, Marion Jones was sentenced to six months in prison, partly because she had lied to investigators regarding her own drug use.

Asked about the latest developments in the investigation in Colorado, where he was launching a week-long stage race to be held in August 2011, Armstrong, who has sought to undermine Landis’s claims by attacking his credibility, said that he had “nothing to say” regarding the federal investigation.
